Post 56-In Memory of Phyllis

17 years ago an excellent singer committed suicide and that singer was Phyllis Hyman. She was born on July 6,1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Pittsburgh. She was in couple bands before being noticed and moving to New York,New York. She worked in clubs and made her first album "Somewhere in My Lifetime" during the late 1970s. Also during that time she began using cocaine ,which led to a life-long dependency. Her first top ten song was "Can't We Fall In Love Again", a duet with Michael Henderson in 1981,which she performed in the Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies for two years. After that she decided to take a break from Broadway and recording and do something different so she did movie soundtracks, television commercials and guest vocals, working with Chuck Mangione, The Whispers and The Four Tops. She then recorded several other albums until her death in 1995. She committed suicide on June 30,the same day she was supposed to perform at the Apollo Theater, by overdosing on  barbiturates. She was found unconscious and taken to the hospital, only to die 3 hours later. She wrote a note before committing suicide that said:

"I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you."

She will always be remembered for her voice and the way she sang. I love her voice and her music and I will never forget her. She will be remembered and today in honor of her my quotes will be from her.

"Be nice to take that thing home and put it on my wall - but you know it ain`t even real. Just a record they spray-painted gold. But that`s OK. I`ll take this and be more than thrilled! I`ve been in the business long enough to collect a whole bunch of them suckers!" -Phyllis Hyman

"Oh, I`m a ballad queen for sure... I don`t dig dance stuff very much but I seem to hit the charts with it. Go figure... "-Phyllis Hyman

"You have to will get as much out of this business as you put into it."-Phyllis Hyman

Post 53-International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

red ribbon is the drug awareness ribbon.
Today is International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking has been going on for a very long time due to the laws of no drugs. Its very sad how many people have died of drugs or have been killed because of drug dealing. Drugs is something that is so cruel and messed up. It messes your life up forever and if one person just tweeted or put something up on Facebook about drug awareness one person could be saved or could change and get away from drugs or not take the because of that one tweet. Its amazing when u see one person is saved by that one tweet and today I want to contribute by spreading drug awareness. Drugs posses you and once you get into drugs you will be addicted. Once you try drugs your life will change drastically. So today I'm telling anyone who reads the blog post please don't get into drugs or sell them JUST SAY NO! Because once you take them your life will change and you will change forever. Today since its International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking my quotes will be about drugs and drug awareness.

A pill to make you numb
A pill to make you dumb
A pill to make you anybody else
But all the drugs in this world
Won't save her from herself”
― Marilyn Manson

“Here is the solution to the American drug problem suggested a couple years back by the wife of our President: "Just say no.”

Post 44- Cyd Charisse

4 years ago we lost an amazing dancer and actress and that person is Cyd Charisse. Cyd was born on March 8th,1922. Her birth name was Tula Ellice Finklea but her nickname was sid after her little sister trying to call her sis but instead calling her sid. It was later changed to Cyd for her stage name. She was from  Amarillo, Texas. She had polio as a child and after overcoming it, to get her strength back she was put into ballet lessons. She did ballet all of her ealy life and studied ballet with people like  Adolph Bolm and Bronislava Nijinska. For her career she was an actress and a dancer. She always loved to dance but not so much act  but back then most dancer were shorter and she was tall so she couldn't make her living being a dancer, but that didn't stop her from being known! She worked several times with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. She played the lead role in the movie The Band Wagon and played the lead female role alongside Gene Kelly in the musical It's Always Fair Weather . She was also in Singing in the Rain, my all time favorite, and Brigadoon. She loved Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly a lot and was always inspired by them so to work with them was an amazing thing for her.She was such wonderful and brilliant dancer and actress. She inspires me to be a dancer but also to be an actress. I go more for dancing and singing than I do acting, but with the way she acts while dancing shes just amazing and inspiring. She also inspires me to push through what ever sickness or pain I'm going through because ,remember, she overcame polio at the age of seven. That must have been hard to have polio, but then to overcome and live to be 86 is awesome! Cyd Charisse has lived a long life and died in 2008. Now she's with Gene and Fred in heaven having a cocktail. We will miss all three of them,But we will never forget Cyd in The Bandwagon! She will not be forgotten!Todays quotes will be in the remembrance of Cyd Charisse.
(On explaining why she never tapped on-screen) "I was pulled up as a ballet dancer and I wasn`t used to pounding the floor with bent knees."- Cyd Charisse

"Fred could never do the lifts Gene did and never wanted to. I`d say they were the two greatest dancing personalities who were ever on the screen. Each has a distinctive style. Each is a joy to work with. But it`s like comparing apples and oranges. They`re both delicious."- Cyd Charisse

Post 43-The Soweto uprising

From Wikipedia-"Hector Pieterson being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubo after being shot by South African police. His sister, Antoinette Sithole runs beside them. Pieterson was rushed to local clinic and declared dead on arrival at the clinic."
On this day 36 years ago something happened in South Africa that was done by the devil. Something very sad and cruel happened and that was the event known as the Soweto Uprising. The Soweto Uprising was a rally/protest on June 16th, 1976 in Soweto,South Africa. Students from several Sowetan schools protested in the streets of Soweto in the introduction of the language Afrikaans being in schools as the main language.  In 1974 the South African Minister of Bantu Education and Development, MC Botha, issued a decree saying that all black schools had to use  Afrikaans and English in a 50-50 mix as languages in school. Most blacks in south Africa knew English not Afrikaans so this was such a disadvange because instead of for example answering a question or filling in a work sheet and learning that subject they would have to learn the language first. This also was offensive to some students who to their practice in faith and in church did not speak in Afrikaans. To them it was "the language of the oppressor". So because of this law the students of Soweta went in protest in a peaceful matter. They stayed peaceful and never got violent. The police came and blocked their way of walking so they went the opposite dirction but never tried to be violent. One officer started something that changed the whole protest. On officer fired his gun and then an outbreak happened and all the other police started shooting all these children. The policeman who first shot(supposedly) was  Colonel Kleingeld. Acording to Wikipedia      ( )"In Kleingeld's account, some of the children started throwing stones as soon as they spotted the police patrol, while others continued to march peacefully." Now nobody really knows if that's true or not but even if it is its not cool just to kill children. Anyways lots of children got wounded and hurt. So got mobbed because all the children went running, some got shot, and some got bitten by police dogs. In the end its estimated that 200 to 600 children and adults(because some teachers and priest did join in)died and an estimated thousand and counting wounded children and adults. They fought for their rights and in the end the devil comes in. I am inspired by this to go out and to bring peace to world. It inspires me to try to be peaceful and not violent. Today in honor of The Soweto Uprising my quotes will be about peace.

I dream of an Africa which is in peace with itself.-
Nelson Mandela

We must see that peace represents a sweeter music, a cosmic melody, that is far superior to the discords of war.

Post 42- Ella Fitzgerald

I love Ella Fitzgerald and its very sad to see such and amazing person go away from this world. 16 years ago on this day Ella passed due to Diabetes mellitus. She was truly the Lady and Queen of jazz. She was born in Newport, Virginia but later moved to Yonkers,Newyork. She always loved music as she grew up. Her mom died of a Heart Attack in 1932. After her Mom died she often skipped school and was abused by her step-father. She then went with her Aunt but got into gangs and the authorities caught up with her and took her to an orphanage. Then she went to New York Training School for Girls in Hudson, New York, because the orphanage was to crowded. She later escaped and was homeless for a little while. She made her break by singing at the Apollo Theater on  "Amateur Nights" an won. From there on she was amazing and well known. She had a very hard childhood and still, she became a jazz icon. She and Louis have become my inspirations in jazz. She had a talent that was to natural and so real. She had the hardest childhood, had no lessons in dance or singing and she just had it!She was pure talent and pure awesomeness. I and the world are going to miss her smile and her smooth jazz like personality. I will forever miss her but her voice will go on forever in her music. Today in honor of Lady Ella my quotes will be from her.

"It isn't where you came from, its where you're going that counts."-Ella Fitzgerald

"Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong."-Ella Fitzgerald

41-Flag Day

Flag Day is a day to honor America and the flag. I think its an awesome day for America to come together and remember our flag and what it means. It also is a great day to strut our flag. But it also is a day to remember other countrys' flags and to find out what each one means or why it was designed a certain way. Well, today is Flag Day. I hope every body has been strutting those flags up in the air to honor America. Todays quotes will be about flags in honor of Flag day.
Freedom of religion is a principle that is central to our Nation's Declaration of Independence. Congress has taken this positive step to protect our freedom to express allegiance to America's flag and the ideals it represents.-Ron Lewis

Post 40- Disney and Pixar

I love Disney and Pixar. They both produce such awesome and amazing movies. I remember the first time I watched Toy Story and ever since then I've been hooked.I love What Disney and Pixar do. I love all the movies they made and love how they make them. They make movies not just because they want to make money but because they love filmography and love what they're doing. They inspire me not to give up. There have been several movies including Toy Story were they had to start over or only had a little time to make the movie but that didn't stop them from making a good movie. There was one point were Disney wasn't going to make Toy Story but because of the director and all of the people involved they completely redid Toy Story and then Disney said OK well keep it going. If they had just given up and listened to Disney then the movie wouldn't have been made. That is one thing I love about Disney and Pixar is that they never give up. They are truly amazing and I love the both.Today my quote will be from Disney and Pixar.

Every single Pixar film, at one time or another, has been the worst movie ever put on film. But we know. We trust our process. We don't get scared and say, 'Oh, no, this film isn't working.'-John Lasseter

Post 39- Last day of School

I remember the first time I walked into my middle school. Boy was I scared, nervous, and excited all at the same time. While in middle school I met some great friends! But now we will be separated and put into different schools depending on where we live. I hate my group of friends spilting up but we will keep in contact and our town is not that big.I am excited to go to high school but it won't be the same without all my friends together. but there is one thing  love about all my friends and my whole group is that we have no regrets. We lived middle school to the best of our ability and beyond and we had fun.So even though we won't be together for the upcoming years we will have those memories of us being silly 6th and 7th graders and all the fun stuff we did together. Since today is the last day of school my quote will be about memories because we will always have those memories of each other and middle school.

Post 38-Happy birthday Gene Wilder!

I remember the first time I watched Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. I was 4 or 5. I remember thinking how does Willy Wonka eat that lemon cup. Gene Wilder is such an awesome actor. He wanted to bring a fantasy to so many kids and ,adults too, and so he did. He was born on June11,1933 in  Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His original name was Jerome Silberman. He had a hard childhood with his mom being diagnosed with rheumatic fever. He tried to make his mom laugh to help her fell better and at age 8 he realized his acting talent. His mom sent him to Black-Foxe, a military institute in Hollywood because she didn't she felt that his potential wouldn't be fully realized in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There have been several reports that Gene was abused and and bullied for being the only Jewish boy there so he later went back to Wisconsin and got involved with the local theater. He graduated high school and went to The University of Iowa. He then did lots of medical things as well as acting classes. In 1957 his mom died of ovarian cancer and 32 years later his wife died of the same cancer. His first acting job was on a TV series called The DuPont Show of the Week. Then he went on to do lots of movies and TV series but he is most known for his role as Willy Wonka. I love the way he presents himself and love his acting. He's very funny and loved by millions of people. So today my quote will be from him since today is his 79th birthday. My he have more birthdays to come and more pure imagination in his life.

I don't mean to sound - I don't want it to come out funny, but I don't like show business. I love - I love acting in films. I love it.-Gene Wilder

Willy Wonka: [singing] There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you'll be free if you truly wish to be.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow - The Wizard of Oz THANKS JUDY! Happyt birthday!

Post 37- Happy birthday Judy!

Judy Garland was one of the best actresses out there. She has received so many awards and has been honored so many times it isn't funny. She was an American actress and singer.  She was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, on June 10th,1922. Her original birth name was Frances Ethel Gumm ,but later with  getting famous, changed it to Judy Garland. Her parents were vaudevillians and ran a movie theater while also putting on vaudevillian acts. She performed through her childhood until she was 12 or 13 years old with her two older sisters as the Gumm Sisters. The Gumm sisters did a couple movies and toured a lot until Judy without a screen test got signed at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She was a very different girl from the other girls. In 1935 it was the glamorous look not the girl-next-door look. So it was difficult for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and for her. She acted in a couple movies and did radio shows until The Wizard of Oz came along and that was it she was perfect from then on. Everyone loved her voice and she was the new look. People have admired her ever since the Wizard of Oz. I love her so much. She is awesome and has inspired me and lots of other youth set out their dream and to go for it no matter what. She was so different for that period. She went to school with Elizabeth Taylor and lots of other famous girls who were tall and skinny and she was often the odd one and called the Ugly Duckling, but she kept through it and became famous. post 36- Jacob Lawrence

Jacob Lawrence is well, Amazing! I'm sorry there is no other way to start off this most than with his's amazing! HIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!! I'm sorry just wanted to get this into your head anyway. Today is the 12th anniversary of his death. He was one of the most influential people during the 20th century. He showed the normal white American what it was like to be an African American and what it was like to live in Harlem. He also showed what its like to migrate. He was born and raised in Atlantic city, New Jersey till he was 13 and then moved to New York City. His Mom enrolled him in classes at an arts and crafts settlement house in Harlem to keep him busy. There he started to realize his passion. From there on,he drew and painted his whole life and in his paintings he showed how the African American lived and his perspective of the world around him. He went on to teach and become a great artist. He inspires me so much. He painted the world around him and for any artist that's what they want to do and so do I. So today my quote will be from him.

When the subject is strong, simplicity is the only way to treat it.-Jacob Lawrence

Post 35-Happy World Oceans Day!!!!!!!!

Today is very special day. Today is World Oceans Day. Now I've always been a life for respecting our land but I haven't talked about our waters. I remember in 2009 when that big oil spill happened and it just made my heart melt when I saw how the ocean looked with all the oil in it and the dead Seagulls. Ever since then I have also took in consideration to not put stuff in rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. World Ocean day is an yearly event on June 8 that was made to raise awareness and raise money toward ocean animals and to get the word out to protect our oceans not destroy it because the world need water and animals to survive. If oceans go away so do we!So today as more than 400 hundred events happen in 70 different countries my quotes today are going to be about keeping our ocean Protected and clean!

Before computers, telephone lines and television connect us, we all share the same air, the same oceans, the same mountains and rivers. We are all equally responsible for protecting them.- Julia Louis-Dreyfus

If man doesn't learn to treat the oceans and the rain forest with respect, man will become extinct.-Peter Benchley

Post 34--Murder of James Byrd, Jr.

13 years ago a very sad and cruel thing happened in the world that changed America. The Murder of James Byrd, Jr. On that day june 7th,1998 three men did something so crucial. They killed James by beating him and torturing him and then tying him to the back of their pick up truck and dragging him across asphalt for three miles. And all just because he was black. The three white men that did this are  Shawn Berry, Lawrence Brewer, and John King. Because of this horrible murder there was an act made called the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The act expands the 1969 United States federal hate-crime law to include crimes done because of the victims gender, color, sexual orientation,ETC.Because of this murder it is one of the many racial crimes that America will remember in history. So today my quote is going to be about racial discrimination in honor of James Byrd,Jr.

Discrimination is a disease.-Roger Staubach

How I wish we lived in a time when laws were not necessary to safeguard us from discrimination.-Barbra Streisand

Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them.-Martain Luther King ,Jr.

Post 33- Patrick Henry

213 years ago Patrick Henry died. He was one of many politicians that influenced and fought for Americas independence. He believed in taxation without representations and was a very strong republican. He wanted freedom and he wanted it badly. He has a famous speech that will be remembered in history forever. He helped our freedom be by what he said. He inspired so many people with this speech to go fight against the Stamp Act of 1765. I wish he was alive again because now (lots of people don't know or realize this) but we have the same problem here in America. Do we really know where our taxes are going? He has inspired me to fight for freedom just like he did for others 200 years ago. There was something in that speech that inspired people the most. Those words made it so clear how much he wanted independence and today that is the quote of the day from Patrick Henry.

"Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" -Patrick Henry

Post 32-Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs changed the world forever. He was born February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California. He was adopted after his parents couldn't raise him because his girlfriends family didn't like the relationship. They couldn't get married and the moms family was not going to let them keep steve his parents had to put him up for adoption. He was then adopted by Paul and Clara jobs. He had a pretty normal childhood. As a child he was exceptionally smart. He didn't like to study and didn't but when that test came he got a perfect score every time. As a child he also loved to take stuff apart such as televisions and radios and put them back together. He had this hobby called  technical tinkering. He was very in to technology and loved to invent. He was very successful in technology as we all know. But he was a person that had this dream. A dream like no other to have a computer that did everything for you. A computer that every one could use and if it wasn't for him we wouldn't be in our first technology generation and have our world so globalized without him! He made this world get together and be connected as one using his ideas of having a home computer and creating MAC. He inspires me to think your idea and not only think about it but bring that idea, dream, or invention to world no matter how hard it takes. So today my quote will be from him.

Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me.-Steve Jobs
